All students are to follow the below timetable to enable them to submit/complete their TOK essay on time.

For all deadlines you must upload the work using this template.
Put your name and a file description on every file you upload as that way 2 files with the same name will not be uploaded. i.e. if everyone uploaded a file called Ideassofar.doc your work would not be on your page as there would be two files with this name on the Wikispaces server. Follow this naming convention to avoid problems

Chosen Essay title: The possession of knowledge carries an ethical responsibility. Evaluate this claim

I have chosen this title because in my opinion it will give me a wide range of options from which to choose from to back up my answer, making the essay more interesting as I will be able to pick and choose different examples that are relevant to my argument. It's also interesting topic to think about; if you have a certain knowledge that could help or hurt someone then are you obliged to impart that knowledge? And should you have been able to make the decision of doing this in the first place? I think that i'd enjoy not only writing about this essay title but the research alone for it would intrigue me and keep me interested.

Ways of Knowing: Reason and emotion will be the main ways of knowing that i will include in the essay. As they both have an profound effect on our ethics and how we behave when faced with different information or choices.

Areas of Knowledge: Ethics will obviously be the main area of knowledge in the essay, but natural and human sciences would also be included as they would provide quite a few different examples to back up any claims that I will be stating. History may also feature as there will almost definitely be some good examples of possession of knowledge carrying an ethical responsibility. Such as Albert Einstein's knowledge of nuclear physics and how his scientific contribution was a major part in making the atomic bombs that were eventually dropped on Hiroshima at the end of World War II.
  • If somebody witnesses a crime happen and don’t do anything. They then have knowledge of the incident and have an ethical resonsibilty to use it to help the victim
    • Bystander effect.
    • Does this make them as guilty as the person carrying out the crime?
  • Albert Einstein had unparalleled knowledge of Nuclear Physics. Did he have an ethical responsibility to impart this knowledge?
    • Led to the invention of the nuclear bomb
      • Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
  • In everyday life.. If you are sitting an exam and you have know the answers to the questions but your classmate doesn’t, and asks you for help. Do you have an ethical responsibility to impart that knowledge?
  • In the case of Ben Johnson at the 1988 Seoul Olympics he was given performance enhancing drugs by his doctor, not knowing what they were but trusting his doctor. He then got caught and lost his world record and gold medal. Was the doctor responsible as he was the one who had the expertise of the medication and if it could be caught or not?
